Senegal – Fulani
A New Frontier in Africa
| Main Language | Pulaar |
| Largest Religion | Islam |
| Population of People Group | 5 million |

People Group Description
Despite Senegal being over 95% Muslim, missionaries are welcome, and visas are easy to get.
The Fulani (or Pulaar), who make up 27.5% of the population, are credited with being the first in Senegal to convert to Islam 1000 years ago. In Senegal, the Fulani are divided into three distinct sub-groups and mostly live in rural areas. Villages are scattered, but each has a central court and a mosque. Their lives revolve around their herds of cattle or sheep, but they also farm, fish, or engage in trade to feed their families. Their diet consists mainly of grains and milk, but they also raise cotton, millet, corn, and peanuts as cash crops.
Ministry Overview
The vision of World Team Senegal is to come alongside Senegal’s missions, churches, and Muslim Background Believers (MBBs) to see reproducing churches among the Fulani people. Teams will seek to meet felt needs of the community (education, water, agriculture, health) through team skills or external networks, providing platforms for sharing the Gospel through Discovery Bible Studies (DBS). As believers emerge, the team will disciple MBBs and conduct trainings to improve community needs and reinforce discipleship.
Team Emphasis
The team will emphasize holistic ministries to build relationships with local people and have spiritual conversations.
God is Working
There are some encouraging reports of Fulani coming to Christ, especially in nearby Gambia. Another ministry is focusing on training Fulani MBBs, and informal cooperation is starting to happen between missions that want to reach the Fulani.
Prayer Focus
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to begin working among the Fulani, preparing hearts for the gospel.
- Pray for long-term workers with various skills who are committed to using holistic ministries to build relationships in order to share the gospel.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” -Luke 4:18-19
